As you approach the next step in your training, you have much to consider. Your growth and development as a family physician, desire to make a difference in your unique way, and maintaining quality of life may all be on your mind.

At the NH Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency, residents and faculty have created a learner-centered program that allows everyone to make a difference in a variety of ways. As you care for our diverse population, including the most vulnerable in the community, you will make a difference in the lives of individuals and families. When you participate in our Future of Family Medicine project, you help make a difference in the way health care is delivered and experienced by those we serve. You will make a difference in the health of the community through your longitudinal project. In your role as a teacher, you will make a difference in the development of your colleagues, visiting medical students, and other health professionals. As a member of the patient care team, you will receive education in quality assurance methods to make a difference in your practice. Since we are located in the State capital, there are opportunities to make a difference in New Hampshire’s healthcare policies through advocacy work.

The strong clinical training residents receive in our community hospital has made our graduates feel well prepared for practice. Our experienced, multidisciplinary faculty is dedicated to excellence in teaching and service to patients and colleagues. Eight of our 13 family practitioners provide obstetrical care, which offers substantial role modeling for residents. Our ten-year experience with EMRs facilitates documentation and integrating evidence-based medicine at the point of care.

Of equal importance with your clinical preparation is your development as a professional clinician. Medicine demands a multitude of skills, including leadership, negotiation, conflict resolution, effective collaboration and self-reflection. We’ve created a longitudinal leadership curriculum for this that combines didactic and experiential education, taught by experienced faculty. For those interested in further honing these skills, we offer advanced training in change leadership. After completing this track, learners are board eligible in both family medicine and preventive medicine and have received a Master of Public Health degree from Dartmouth Medical School. Much of your growth as a professional and person will come from self-reflection. You have an advisor throughout residency who provides you with feedback, personal support and a connection to resources. Every other week, you are given time with your classmates to process your experiences in a Balint group. We have worked hard to develop the positive relationships between residents and faculty necessary for an environment conducive to you fulfilling your educational and personal growth goals.

We believe we provide excellent preparation for full spectrum family practice and community leadership. We sincerely hope you will come visit us. We would appreciate the opportunity to introduce you to the talented, diverse group of residents, faculty, and staff we have been fortunate to attract. We look forward to learning more about you, educating you about us and showing how you can make a difference!

Best Wishes,
