CONCORD, N.H.
- Joel C. Berman, MD, has been named the chief medical information officer at Concord Hospital. In this new position, Berman will provide the clinicians’ perspective in guiding the acquisition and implementation of information technology to the needs of Concord Hospital healthcare providers and clinical staff that ultimately benefit patients.

Berman has been a physician with Penacook Family Physicians and on the hospital’s medical staff for 25 years, and is a past member of the hospital’s Board of Trustees. He will continue to provide physician leadership for the implementation of information technology tools such as computerized provider order entry (CPOE) and in the ongoing development of electronic medical records (EMRs) that improve patient outcomes and the delivery of quality care in primary care settings.

CPOE allows healthcare providers to directly enter clinical orders into a computer for hospitalized patients and the EMR enhances the quality of care physicians provide in their offices. Both of these information technology tools help improve patient safety and reduce preventable errors. EMRs also offer healthcare providers prompts at the point of medical care to help improve health maintenance and chronic disease management.

“Dr. Berman plays a pivotal role in utilizing information technology on behalf of our patients to ensure a safe, high quality, efficient and cost effective healthcare environment at Concord Hospital and its associated practices,” said Dr. David Green, chief medical officer at Concord Hospital. “He’s had a long distinguished career in family medicine at Penacook Family Physicians which is a tremendous asset for this new position and has constant contact with our medical staff.”

A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pittsburgh, PA, Berman completed his family practice residency at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Conn. He is board-certified in family medicine.
