Concord Hospital recognizes the surgical experience can be intimidating for children, as well as their parents. To familiarize them both with the people and experiences they will encounter the day of surgery and to help ease the child’s anxiety and the parents’ concerns, the hospital offers pediatric preoperative tours in the Day Surgery Center. The Day Surgery Center is open daily Monday through Friday and tours are free and available upon request in the afternoons or early evening.
Who Should Attend the Tour
The preoperative tour is for children of all ages that are scheduled for surgery and their parents or guardians. The tour focuses on creating a fun, educational and age-appropriate experience for the child.
What You Will Do and See on the Tour
A registered nurse will greet the child and parents and talk about their surgical experience in the Day Surgery Center. They will be shown the special clothing and cap the child will wear into the operating room and the oxygen mask and monitoring equipment that is used. The child and parents will be given a tour of the preoperative area and the recovery room and will have the opportunity to meet the staff in those areas.
What to Bring
Children and parents are encouraged to bring their questions. There are many opportunities during and after the tour to ask many questions. It is our recommendation that parents write a list of their questions in advance to bring with them the day of the tour. Additionally, children are invited to bring along a favorite blanket or comfort toy if desired.
