Aquatic Therapy Print Page

Aquatic therapy involves exercises and activities that use the buoyancy of water to lessen stress on joints and encourage movement that otherwise might not occur when using traditional land-based treatment.

Aquatic therapy is a beneficial addition to traditional occupational and physical therapy. Water eases early weight-bearing, reduces swelling and pain, and assists and strengthens movement. Also, the resistance provided in a high-level aquatic workout allows for excellent strengthening exercises and cross training for all types of injuries.

Aquatic therapy benefits people by helping to increase movement, lessen pain, reduce swelling and improve functioning. It is an effective treatment for people with the following conditions:

  • Amputation
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic pain
  • Decreased conditioning
  • Knee, hip or shoulder replacements
  • Back injury or post-surgical back pain
  • Muscle spasm
  • Orthopaedic trauma
  • Reduced endurance
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Stroke (CVA)
  • Reduced endurance
  • Prenatal fitness

Aquatic therapy is offered at the Center for Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation. Appointments are available between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The indoor pool at the Center for Sports Medicine is 90 degrees and has turbo jets, stairs, and shallow and deep water that allows therapists to provide advanced and professional care. Additionally, the pool has entry stairs and a seat lift. Flotation devices including belts, cuffs and tethers are also available. A locker room and shower facilities are located next to the pool.

Prenatal pool exercise programs

The Center for Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation offers prenatal pool exercise programs. The program promotes cardiovascular fitness, maintains strength, encourages range of motion and provides support for pregnant women. The class meets twice a week for four weeks and is held in the center's indoor pool.
